Re-enactors gear up for Civil War anniversary battle

Robert Schwandt of Suamico wants to keep tradition alive in his family, just as long as his wife lets him.

Fifty years ago, Schwandt's father participated in the re-enactment of the First Battle of Bull Run, the first major land battle of the Civil War. With the Civil War's 150th anniversary this year, Schwandt is getting into war mode as he gears up for battle this weekend in Virginia.

"He couldn't go this year," Schwandt said about his father. "I wanted to go in his place, sending his representation."

Schwandt, along with 50 Green Bay-area residents, will recreate Company E of the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry at Manassas National Battlefield Park in Manassas, Va. They will join thousands of re-enactors this weekend as they go to war to celebrate the milestone anniversary.

"Re-enacting is a wonderful hobby," Schwandt said. "I'm starting with Bull Run and ending with Appomattox. That is, if my wife lets me."

The men will travel to Virginia on a bus for 16 hours, beginning Thursday morning. Many of them are history buffs, and some are going simply to witness the historic event.
